Transport and Transfer of Municipal Solid Waste

Transport and Transfer of Municipal Solid Waste

Pick Up Time

The transfer of waste from dustbins to containers.

Haul Time

Transferring dustbin waste to disposal sites and locations.

At Site Time

The waiting period or time of the truck at the disposal location.

Off Site Time

Activities like stopping for tea, snacks, tolls, taxes, etc., consuming time, known as Off Site time.

Transfer Station

A transfer station is a temporary processing site for waste.

At the transfer station, local waste collection vehicles deposit waste before loading into larger vehicles.

Larger vehicles then transport the waste to treatment, recycling facilities, or disposal sites.

Transfer and transport in solid waste management refers to facilities used to move waste from one location to another.

Needs of Transfer Station for Municipal Solid Waste

Transfer and transport operations are needed when hauling distances to processing containers or disposal sites become too great for direct hauling to be economically feasible.

They are also necessary when processing containers or disposal sites are remote and cannot be reached directly by highway.

Transfer operations can be attractive due to factors like illegal dumping, distant disposal sites, small capacity collection vehicles, low-density residential areas, and specific collection systems.

Types of Transfer Station

There are three types of transfer stations:

  • Direct transfer station
  • Storage transfer station
  • Dual direct and storage transportation
